Meaning & History

Means "to bring light, to make appear", from Ancient Greek φαίνω (phaino) meaning "to appear, make known; to shine, give light". This was the name of several historical figures, including Phanes of Halicarnassus, a councilman and mercenary who served the Egyptian pharaoh Amasis II. It was also the name of the primordial god of creation in the Orphic tradition.
