Released in 2000 it's main competitor was the SEGA Dreamcast and then later the Nintendo Gamecube and Microsoft Xbox, the console's DVD player which some games also came on is attributed to its monumental success and some attribute the continued support of the system into the early 2010's to the hardware being comparable to Sony's Playstation Portable handheld console and the also popular but underpowered Nintendo Wii providing the system with many games even after the release of the Playstation 3. Its best selling game as of December 2009 was Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, which sold 17.33 Million units. In 2013 Sony discontinued the Playstation 2 after 13 years of support, the last games released for the system in 2013 were the Final Fantasy XI Online expansion pack "Seekers of Adoulin" in Japan, FIFA 14 in North America and Pro Evolution Soccer 2014 in the UK.
