Meaning & History

Latinized form of Poimenios. This name was borne by a 4th-century Roman governor of Corycus in Asia Minor (now Turkey) and by a usurper who led a revolt at Augusta Treverorum (now Trier in Germany) in the same century.

In Greek mythology, Poemenius was one of the fourteen satyrs that led the satyr troops of Dionysos in his war against the Indians.
