Meaning & History

Derived from the Greek adjective πολυχαρής (polychares) meaning "feeling much joy" as well as "graceful". It consists of the Greek adjective πολύς (polys) meaning "many" as well as "much" combined with either the Greek noun χαρά (chara) meaning "joy, delight, happiness" or the Greek noun χάρις (charis) meaning "grace, kindness" (see Chares).

Known bearers of this name include a tyrant of Athens (5th century BC) and the Olympic victor Polychares of Messenia (8th century BC).
