In L. Frank Baum's "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" (1900), Quelala is a once mentioned character in the prior history of Oz, who saved a race of Winged Monkeys from being destroyed by putting them into servitude. He was from the north of Oz, also known as the Gillikin Country, where the colour of choice is purple.
