Of uncertain etymology. It could be derived from Old Norse rán "robberty, theft" or rámr "hoarse". In Norse mythology, Rán is a sea goddess and ruler of the dead at the bottom of the sea. She is married to Ægir and they have nine daughters together. This is also the traditional name of the star Epsilon Eridani in the constellation Eridanus.
