Meaning & History
Means "archer" in Latin. From the Latin sagittarius 'archer'.Sagittarius is one of the constellations of the zodiac. It is one of the 48 constellations listed by the 2nd-century astronomer PTOLEMY and remains one of the 88 modern constellations. Sagittarius is commonly represented as a centaur drawing a bow, derived from its representation in Greek mythology. It lies between Scorpius and Ophiuchus to the west and Capricornus to the east. In astrology Sagittarius is the ninth astrological sign. Under the tropical zodiac, the sun transits this area on average between November 22 and December 21, and under the sidereal zodiac, the sun currently transits the constellation of Sagittarius from December 16 to January 14. Individuals born during either of these dates, depending on which system of Astrology they choose to follow, may be called Sagittarians.
