Meaning & History

This first name is predominantly found in South America, although it is not very common there: one is much more likely to encounter the name as a surname there instead. Because of that, it is possible that the bearers' parents were inspired to give their sons the surname as a first name, just like it is done in English-speaking countries these days. The surname is a variant form of the surname Zarco, which is ultimately derived from the Spanish word zarco meaning "light blue" (for more information, see Zarco), which is in reference to the eye colour of the surname's original bearer. However, given the fact that the word zarco is still in use in modern Spanish, it is also possible that in the case of some bearers, their parents deliberately named them after the colour, but chose to alter the spelling somewhat. It ultimately doesn't matter either way, as the etymology is the same in both scenarios. So, to make a long story short, one could say that Sarco is a variant spelling of Zarco. It is also slightly more common (as a first name) in South America than Zarco.
