Meaning & History

Meaning unknown. It might possibly be related to the Greek verb σαρμεύω (sarmeuo) meaning "to dig sand", which is ultimately derived from the Greek noun σαρμός (sarmos) meaning "heap of earth, that what is swept together". Another possibility is that the name is related to Σαρμάται (Sarmatai), the Greek name for the Iranian tribe of the Sarmatians.

Sarmeane was the name of a Catholicos of Caucasian Iberia from the 8th century AD. He is venerated as a saint in the Georgian Orthodox Church.
