In Islam, 'Sayyid' (same etymology) is also a honorific title that is borne by the people who are descended from the Prophet Muhammad and his cousin and son-in-law Imam Ali (Ali ibn Abi Talib). Sayyid is the name of a character on the show "Lost," but it seems to me I've seen it spelled "Sayid."

The fact that you have seen it as a different spelling is probably because it has been translated from Arabic, which uses a different alphabet.
