In Islam, 'Sayyid' (same etymology) is also a honorific title that is borne by the people who are descended from the Prophet Muhammad and his cousin and son-in-law Imam Ali (Ali ibn Abi Talib). As such, this name is more or less comparable to Sharif in that regard.
