As an F1 fan, I would definitely name my son "Ahmad Sebastian" so he can become the next F1 driver, since I couldn't become an F1 driver myself!
It dosen't even feel like it's that popular, like I've only heard the named used three or four times. I adore the name Sebastion, the nickname Bash is so cute, i always think of Sebastion the Crab from The Little Mermaid ;)
I love the name Sebastian. It is so strong and handsome, and it ages well. It has a unique exotic charm and fresh sense of originality. I think it is a wonderful moniker.
A great name that holds up well.
I work as a registered nurse for a hospital in North County San Diego and let me say that, yes indeed, Sebastian is a very common name for young boys.
Why just last week I encountered three young boys between the ages of two to six years who share this name. Also, last year in November, was my nephew’s fifth birthday and while waiting for my brother in law to pick us up at the entrance of the Birch Aquarium, I heard a woman call out her son, Sebastian, who was running towards the parking lot ahead of her to wait for her. So, yeah, this name is very popular as other comments have previously mentioned. A good name though if you can stomach the popularity of it.
Negative point, Sebastian is too saturated.
Positive point, it ages well, you can find SEBASTIANs in all ages, among different social strata. I can imagine an infant Sebastian and a grandpa named this.
Very sexy and is my name.
Sebastian is a very handsome, striking name.
Beutiful, masculine and sexy sounding name choice for baby boy for sure...
I have a crush on this name. Sebastian ages very well. It is very handsome and sexy on a grown man.
As much as I love Sebastian, I hate how popular it's become. It's super handsome & charming so I do get why it's gained in popularity! I love the nickname Baz.
This name is one of my favorite and makes me think of that red little guy from the sea with claws. I think of crab sticks and hot salty asphalt that burns your feet so you walk on grass to cool down and the smell of fresh sea water and ancient waves crashing against the rocks and billowing white sleeves and a man with long brown hair. Hot name 10/10 couldn't recommend higher.
Looks so satanic.
Sebastian is a wonderful name! I love it, it seems to represent strength, intelligence, and courage. I think that hating on a name because it is too popular is like hating on water because it is common.
Good name! But it seems too overused as I see a lot of Sebastians. Maybe as a middle name...
Handsome. I love it.
In my opinion the name Sebastian is for people who are pretty much rebels.
When I hear the name Sebastian it makes me think of a cute little boy and then a handsome man. It does sound a bit upper class but also romantic not stuffy. Love the nickname too (Seb).
Ugly.
My feelings on this name are mixed. On one hand, there does appear, at least to me, a certain charm/elegance to this name. My only concern with Sebastian is on how popular it has become as of late.
Beastly sounding name.
I think this is a really wonderful name. It makes me think to an indestructible city or to a diamond. It's also usable anywhere and evergreen to me. I would definitely use it for a child, as well for a fictional character.
I think it’s a very nice name.
Not bad, but I don't like it. Sounds childish and too trendy. Just, not the nicest name.
Too frilly and effeminate. His parents spoil him because they think he's precious.
Not bad, it seems mostly common with Hispanics in the US due to its Catholic Connection, while here in England it's generally considered a middle class name - overall it's okay.
A cool name. I really don’t know what to think of it. Reminds me of a ninja I once knew.
I am currently seven months pregnant and my SO is from Colombia. We have been looking for an English/Spanish friendly first name to be given to our, soon to be, first born son. What my SO and I agree upon is how handsomely dashing this name is.
Sebastian could definitely work for both my family here in the states and my Colombian in-laws. A win-win situation for everybody. ;)
I quite like this name, although I wouldn't use it as I come from a working class background and the name has a stigma of pretentiousness and being part of the upper echelons in society. I also don't like the nickname Seb, which is what it would automatically be shortened to.
Very handsome name.
My husband and I love this name so much that we decided to name our first born son this. It is stylish and we just
love it!
This name, Sebastian, has a wonderful sound to it that leaves me with the impression of an elegant, strong and sophisticated individual that would bear this name with exalted pride. A definite plus from my point of view.
I don't understand why it's become so popular. It sounds pretty weird and pretentious.
One of those names that sounds very elegant, romantic and dreamy. Very handsome for a boy.
I don't really like this name, kinda too long and doesn't seem like it would suit an American child.
I love this name on a boy. I don't know if I would use it, maybe because it's really nice I just think it sounds like a handsome name.
Too long and a bit geeky sounding.
This name requires a strong confident personality as well as a person with a certain elegance.
Very Mediterranean sounding, even though Sebastiano would be the Spanish and Italian form.
I have mixed opinions on this name. The crab from The Little Mermaid is an okay connection, but the guy from Black Butler is not a good connection for me at all.
I can't really imagine a small boy being called "Sebastian", although it does sound nice.
I never thought I would ever name my child this until I found out it was one of my husband's favourite names which made me cringe and at the hospital I wanted to make him happy and picked it --then went into some serious postpartum depression over this name no one could pronounce - horrible nickname etc etc ---in the end we chose a different name... now months later a part of me likes something about it - but I feel it's a burden of a name - long - people saying it all different ways... SAVE YOUR CHILD FROM THIS... THAT IS JUST HOW I FEEL.
I prefer the German pronunciation, as the English one sounds a bit too harsh for me. It's not a bad name, but my mind does kind of immediately go to the crab from "The Little Mermaid," and that's not a good thing seeing as I didn't enjoy the movie.
I named my son Sebastian. It has a nice flow to it and I like that it's pretty much international. Some people pronounce it the American way while others do the European/Latin way. I have a hard time calling him by a nickname since none sound as nice as the full name. I think it's a very special name and I haven't come across it much, which I like as well.
Love this name. Sounds strong and love the fact he can pick Seb or Sebbie as a nickname!
I know a guy with this name. It's a beautiful name, but when people shout it fast across the room, it sounds like "spaz-ti-an". Other than that it's brilliant.
This name is ADORABLE when you are under six, with a cute nickname like Sea Bass. Always, always, always be sure to name your kid Sebastian with a fitting middle name, such as Peter.
Sebastian is a handsome name though I personally think it's too long as a first name and is better as a first name. The downside (which I am not fond of) is it unfortunately sounds like 'bastard'.
Update: I don't care about the syllables anymore, I think this would make a fab first name! And I've gotten over what I said was the downside. ^_^
OOPS! I meant to say I "think it's too long as a first name and is better as a MIDDLE name".
Well, my nickname is Bashi because when I was three my best friend couldn't pronounce my real name and made up the name Bashi but I do also go by Bash- that's what my uncle calls me.
I love Sebastian, I just don't like how popular it is. Bash would make an adorable nickname! I definitely connect this name to a mischievous little boy :)
Quite a handsome name, but reminds me of something getting tangled up.
This name was one of the few names I didn't really care for too much - that is, until I met a really sweet guy by this name. His personality and humor is what makes this long name adorable and sweet. It is not a very common name one hears, at least not in the southern part of the United States. Though it is kind of long, it is a very good name with good meaning behind it :)
I really like this name but unfortunately the bad guy in the Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare goes by this name and I always think of him when I see this name. It would be on my top 5 names for boys if not for that association. I also don't like any nicknames for it, and I feel that it's a bit too long without one.
I have never been a fan of the name Sebastian. There isn't anything blatantly objectionable about it, but it is one of those names that I find annoying to hear spoken. It is something about the "-bastian" pronunciation, I think, and the way "Se-" leads into it... it sounds somewhat whiny and vinegary.
I love the nickname 'sebby' for this name.
My choice for my second son. Sebastian carries almost too much charm for its own good. It is a bold choice, but Sebastian has heaps of personality, not to mention an impressive pedigree. Sebastian is a name I love hearing, and adore saying. It has that special something for me.
I absolutely adore this name ^^ I want to call my son (if I have one) Sebastian. This has nothing to do with Sebastian Moran, honest ;)
Sebastian is my favourite male name, with Bastian being my preferred shortened nickname. However 'Seb' as a nickname is just as good and popular.I'd like it if this name came back into popularity along with some more unusual names. At the moment there's just a surge in people with quite boring and unadventurous names.
I love the same Sebastian though not the commonly used nicknames. I've found that you could use Ian as a nickname for Sebastian. Just take the last 3 letters. A lot of names use this practice, actually.
Sebastian is a very handsome name! I am lucky because in case we would ever want to use this name--Sebastianus was one of my great-great-great grandfather(s) from Germany along with another ancestor of mine, with the very handsome name, Johannes. :)
I also like the fact that Saint Sebastian was a Christian martyr; that he stood for Christianity.
Sebastian seems a very weak name to me. I don't know why though its just my impression of the name - this is not intended as an insult to anyone named Sebastian!
A good nickname would be Seba.
Sebby is an awesome nickname! As several people have noted, it sounds elegant and a little foreign. As such, I don't think it suits all boys everywhere. For instance, I know a Sebastian who is an overweight, bb-gun carrying, southern kid from Tennessee. Meh- not so much. I mean, props to his parents for not choosing boring or trendy. But, no.
I love this name, I always picture a hot guy when I hear it. I hope by the time I have kids, the Little Mermaid association will die off. XD
I always loved this name, but adore it even more after reading the manga Kuroshitsuji/Black Butler. I don't think it would fit a young boy though. Sebastian, to me, sounds like a man's name.
I love The Little Mermaid so I'll always think of a crab! But it is a very common name in England, I mean EVERYONE'S little brother happens to be called Sebastian! I think I know about five people who all have a little brother with this name!
This is my favorite name for a boy, but it has become too trendy. It is equally popular to Sophie, my favorite girl's name, which has also become too trendy.
Sebastian is my favourite masculine name, if I ever have a son I'll call him Sebastian. However, it must be pronounced "se-BAS-tee-un", "se-bas-CHUN" is just tedious.
Well, when I was four The Little Mermaid was my favorite movie ever. It also happened to be the first place I encountered names such as Ariel, Ursula, and, yes, Sebastian. Then I watched it over-and-over-and-over again so everything thoroughly imprinted on my little brain. So now, the name Sebastian has a distinctly crabby air whenever I hear or read it. I really try, but I can't, unfortunately, get past the crab. It doesn't help that I've never met a person named this. I really wish I could, though, because most commenters who mentioned anything besides Sebastian the Crab seemed to love this name.
P.S. No offense to mammalian bearers of this name meant at all! I'm sure many/most of you are very good people and I have no personal prejudice or anything like that.
I really really like this name. It has a good history and meaning and just sounds so lovely and warm. It strikes me as someone who would wear it would be wise and charming.
I'm not sure why I love this name so much, it just sounds so nice out loud.
I named my dog Sebastian. He is a miniature dachshund of the German variety, and it fits him perfectly! He and his name coincide in that they are both long and strong. I wanted him to have a strong, classic name.
Makes me think of that crab of that Disney movie The Little Mermaid. Cute name, though. In the Netherland people who are named "Sebastian" or as the Dutch spell it, "Sebastiaan" are often given the short 'Bas', but I find that very pitiful. Sebastian sounds so much cooler!
Sebastian is extremely elegant and handsome. I shorted it to Seshy or Sessy. And it is a perfect name for a cat.
I used to like this name when I was younger, but now it seems to me like this would be a better name for a cat. Find it too cute for a guy.
I like this name, but it sucks in English if it's pronounced ''se-BAS-chen'', like it usually is. It sounds much, much nicer as ''se-BAS-tee-un''. It still sounds better in other languages, though, but with the latter pronunciation, it doesn't sound ugly in English either.
I love the name Sebastian. It's handsome and elegant and just has a beautiful feeling to it. I love this name!
My name is Sebastian and I love it, although I didn't always. When I was younger and influenced by peer pressure I hated having a name that was different, and being called "Sebastard." Kids can be cruel. So I started going by my middle name "Tony" - uhg! Which I hate now.
But when I got into college and figured out a name can be both classic and cool at the same time, and that girls just really dig this name, I started going by it again. And I'm really happy I did. Many people often tell me they like my name and I'm proud to own it and wear it!
Parents, if you are considering this name do not worry about silly nicknames (ie. Sab, Sebie, or my favorite Sea Bass) or connections with stupid Disney or British comedy characters. ALL names have these problems. Even John. Sebastian is a great name with a great heritage and your son will thank you for when he grows in to it, just like I did.
@sbaraldi My name is also Sebastian and to this day my friends still call me Sebastard and Sebbasterd- it still annoys me till this day.
I love this name, I think it's rather class.
As you can see, my username is Bastien, a shortened form of the French variant of this name. Though it is not my real name, I quite like it.Some of the suggested nicknames, however, I thought were a little, unpleasant. Its most common diminutive is Bastian (not Bastion, that is the French word for fortress and also a protruding sort of architectural element of the same in English usage), though one could easily use Bast or Sebaste for nicknames. And I should be given to disagreement with comments that claim this name is too long--my actual given name is rather short and I wish it were longer. And if you are worried about the little crab, either use a foreign variant or pronounce it see-bahs-tee-ahn rather than see-bahs-chan. Cela peut marcher, n'est-ce pas?
The name of a friend of mine. Only nickname I've heard for him is Sab, but I quite like Sebastian by itself.
I don't like this name. It makes me think of the crab from The Little Mermaid.
Sebastian's a pretty cool name, but I wouldn't use the full name.
I agree with Gaelruadh19 - this name always brings to mind that little crustacean, who is, in my opinion, the best character in that movie. But overall, I think this name is just too "old fashioned", and maybe a little too, I dunno, well, a lot to bear. I wouldn't suggest naming your child this.
This is such a "boy" name to me. I picture a little boy who's funny, charming and mischeivous. I could definitely see myself with a son named Sebastian.
It's a decent name, but I can't hear "Sebastian" without thinking of the crab from Disney's "The Little Mermaid": the names "Ariel", "Ursula", and "Sebastian" hold strong connotations of that film for me.
Love it. So handsome and masculine. I named my camera this, haha.
It does sound nice but it seems too heavy and large a name for a boy. I can't really think of any nicknames for it. Maybe a nice middle name though.
What do you mean, "too heavy and large a name for a boy." Most boys can carry more weight than most girls, right? Seriously, though, why this knee-jerk reaction that a boy's name (or anybody's) must be short? (I think this is more true if a name is unfamiliar than otherwise. I don't think too many people have any problem with "Jonathan" or "Elizabeth," for example.) See my comments at "Constantine."
I agree with "Kosta's" comment about the name. Why are some people claiming the name is too long to be used? I don't think it's too long at all. And I believe it has a nice flow when one pronounces the name. Some people go overboard with nicknames. Some names sound perfect just they way they are. For example: I think Jonathan sounds better than "Jon."
Wrong, there are lots of good nicknames. Seb or Sebby are nice!
You could shorten it to Sebas. Or Bastian. Sebby/Sebbie or something. My friend's name is Sebastian and these names above are what we call him.
Most boys and in Ireland and Britain see this name as a friuty name. Probably because of a character in the British Comedy Sitcom "Little Britain". Who is a gay prime minister. After all, just for laughs.
Sebastian is the best name a boy cold ever have. It is elegant and handsome. I'm sure everyone agrees with me!
