In the Netherlands (and to a lesser extent Belgium), the name Senna only really became popular after the birth of Senna Borsato in September 2001. He is the second child of the successful Dutch-Italian singer Marco Borsato (b. 1966) and his then-wife Leontine Ruiters (b. 1967), a Dutch actress and television presenter. They named him after the Brazilian racing driver Ayrton Senna (1960-1994). So, at least in Borsato's case, the name Senna comes from the surname Senna - in honour of Ayrton Senna. [noted -ed]Sources:

• my own observations. I remember that the name Senna suddenly popped up everywhere not long after Borsato's birth. Before his birth, most people (including myself) had never heard of the name - at least not as a given name! It was a fresh name - exotic yet familiar, as it was reminiscent of Frisian names like Fenna. I guess that's part of why so many Dutch expectant parents embraced the name. The fact that it was the name of a celebrity's child helped too, of course - but that phenomenon is not unique to the Netherlands. There are people all over the world who allow their baby name choice to be inspired by celebrities - no matter if those celebrities are famous globally, or only locally.
I didn't even know Senna was a regularly used name anywhere! I'd just decided it made a cool modern nickname for Asenath (one of the more obscure biblical names). The Senna plant wasn't one I was familiar with, either. That said, as a legal name in Anglophone places Senna might cause some difficulties. Namely, it would get confused with Sienna a lot. That doesn't seem to be a problem in the Netherlands, though.
Emma is so popular now, but Senna has the same soft vowel sounds in a less common and (to me) more interesting package. Unfortunately I don't think I could use it where I live because the first thing that comes up when you search the name in a general search engine is the laxative. It's such a shame - the name is great but it feels a little mean to give a child a name that is mostly associated with laxatives where they live.
Senna Gammour (born 28 December 1979) is a German singer who was a member of the girl group Monrose.
I first heard of the name Senna when I was in high school, and the first such Senna that I knew of was Ayrton Senna, who was a former F1 driver who died in May 1994. The most famous experience with that name, however, did not come until I went to college. One of my classmates in college actually had it as their first name (but with only one N instead of two). During my final semester I realized that a new character for League of Legends would actually be named Senna.
Senna belongs to Ayrton Senna, the late racing driver from Brazil... And Senna is also the most popular name in Netherlands! Thanks to the impact of Senna in Netherlands, a man named Max Verstappen became Netherlands' first Formula 1 World Drivers' Champion this year!
