Of Persian origin, but the meaning is uncertain. Georgian sources state that the name is derived from the Middle Persian noun šēr meaning "lion", of which the modern Persian form is shir (see Shir 2). However, the letter -r- of that name element is usually preserved after transition into Georgian.Perhaps it is more likely that the name is derived from Middle Persian šēd meaning "bright", of which the modern Persian form is shid (compare Shideh).
