Meaning & History

Means "lunar nectar", from the name of an intoxicant used in ancient Vedic ritual, prepared from the juice of some plant, which is from Indo-European *seu- "juice", ultimately from the root *seue- "to take liquid" (cf. Sanskrit sunoti "presses out juice"). Soma is the Rigvedic moon god (sometimes identified with Chandra).
