Meaning & History

Italian form of the Late Latin name Sperantia. In part it is directly from the Italian word meaning "hope". Edmund Spenser used it in his epic poem The Faerie Queene (1590). This was also assumed as a pen name by Irish poet Lady Wilde (1821-1896), the mother of Oscar Wilde.
