I love it! I just named my son Sterling Wyatt. He was born 6 months ago on Mother's Day. I don't like typical names, and I am glad I chose something for my son that will set him apart from the rest. I loved the name Liam for the longest time, but too many people have named their child that. Everyone will have their own opinion about how they feel about this name, but I have 0 regrets naming my child this.
My mother *almost* named me Sterling and I'm a girl, I probably would have loved it if it was actually my name... but to me this is a boy's name. I can only think of the little boy Sterling in the Kit Kitteridge American Girl book series.
My uncle is named Sterling. He is such a kind but strong man; he is always well put together and his words are well thought out and kind. His personality is that he is polite, quiet, and is respectful. He is always smiling and is charismatic; I don’t know anyone who doesn’t like him. He is around 60 years old now, but my family says when he was a teen and in his 20’s— all the neighborhood girls had a crush on Uncle Sterling. I could see that, because his smile really just lights up the room. Because of the great impression I have of my Uncle Sterling, I just really love this name. It makes me think of a very kind, loving, “people person” type of man. I could see a cute little boy opening doors for older ladies and them saying, “Oh Sterling, such a sweetheart”. Hehe. I think this is a wonderful name.
My first name is Sterling and I am a girl. I don't understand why people don't like the name on a girl like I honestly think it's a great name! Better than a common name in my opinion. I honestly think it's a cute and honorable name!
My grandfather's name(s) were John Joseph Sterling So*****and. I nearly added Sterling as a middle name. I named my 2005 3.0 liter Jaguar S-Type 'Stirling" (after the famous British race-car driver Stirling Moss). This befits a noble four-door Saloon of great repute. There's really nothing to be added to this particular missive, is there?
It's honestly really cute imo! But it only fits a baby girl to me.
Sounds too surnamey and pretentious. It's ridiculous on girls.
My name is Sterling, and I was named after my great uncle that died in a bus crash after winning the football championship when he was in high school. The high School gym was named the Heater Newman memorial gym, after the two people that died in the bus crash. My uncle Sterling Heater, and Al Newman. I love my name.
My brother's name is Sterling. It means 'pure', and 'of value', but my brother? Eh...Still, he got named after our great uncle who died in a bus crash. In Grant's Pass, Oregon (Where I live) The high school's gym is named the Heater Newman Memorial gym. After him. So I think it's a good name.
It sounds too pretentious. If you give your son this name, then he would probably get beat up at school. Poor families usually give their kids names like this. They name their offspring after things they can't afford. A typical Sterling would likely have sisters named Mercedes and Diamond.
It’s nice but old fashioned now. Preferred as a surname.
I have arrived to say that I am a female, and my first name is Sterling! I personally think it's pretty great as a name, especially since my middle name is "AG" (look it up, in the periodic table!) Also I get to say that I have quite a Sterling personality XD I also really love the history behind this name, it's been passed through my family quite a bit, and to find out that it was an old Scottish city is pretty awesome! And to top it off, there's a little town in Alaska called Sterling.
I think it's a very nice name. On rejecting it solely based on its association with (specifically British) currency, it's not like the name "Penny" exists...
I think it sounds weird as a first name, but that's due to my last name being Sterling.
I'm usually not a fan of surnames as names, but I really like this one. It sounds more masculine to me.
It probably wouldn't work on a British child, though, because of the currency.
I'm a girl with the name Sterling. I'm often confused for a boy before people meet. And everyone seems to think that it's pretty. I see my name as one that is becoming gender neutral, like Shawn and Tyler are where I live.
My maiden name is Sterling and have often wondered whether my roots are English or Scottish. My father definitely had the Scottish trait of being a very frugal, but a successful man.
I like this name. It's a little pretentious and uppity sounding, but when paired with the right name it could work. Reminds me of Sterling Holloway who did the voices in Winnie The Pooh, his name had a memorable ring to it.
This is a distinguished, masculine name for a boy. It evokes class and distinction. A great choice for parents who like virtue names, but want something with an alternative meaning. Not sure why this is starting to rank as a girl's name, it's decidedly masculine. Hope it's not muddied too much by clueless parents.
I like the name a lot! It's also a great sounding last name. Don't like the name for a girl because I'm not a fan of unisex, unfeminine names for girls.
Sterling is not mainly a guys name. I'm a girl and I love being named Sterling. It's extremely uncommon and people love how "pretty" the name Sterling is. I tend to get a few nicknames and I like them. Sterl the girl is by far one of my favorites. I get sterl, silver, ling, and a few others. I know two guys named Sterling. I do sometimes get mistaken for a guy on paper. But it's all apart of the life you lead when your name is as awesome as Sterling.
This was actually the nickname given to me by a good friend in middle school. The fact that it's also the name of British money doesn't bother me. I know about Sterling Silver, haha, and don't see anything wrong with that. We have people with similar names or named after places/jewels/colors so what's the difference?
Sterling is an awesome name! It's uncommon but not unheard of, and I can see it on all ages fairly easily. There's no nicknames for it though, but that doesn't really matter anyway. Not everyone likes or wants to use nicknames. Overall, I think Sterling is an interesting and refreshing choice for a name :)
My paternal great grandfather's name was Sterling. (It was his moms maiden name.) I think it's really cool!
I must be crazy, because this name isn't masculine to me at all. Perhaps it's because I think of sterling silver and jewelry and the like, but to me, Sterling is feminine. I'm not sure how well a girl with the first name Sterling would fare in today's world, but I'd totally use it for a female character. I also think it makes a great feminine middle name.
It's too bad that it's associated with Sterling silver and English money. I love the sound of Sterling, though it might be a bit heavy for a boy to bear. This name sounds scholarly, serious, and masculine. I'd hate to see Sterling on a female.
Way better for a boy than a girl.
Very handsome and masculine name. I love it (boy only)!
ACTUALLY, my name is Sterling, and I am a GIRL. Okay! I am not embarrassed, it is a cool name to have and everyone loves it OKAY. So don't hate on my name, it is beautiful and I am proud.
I know a girl named Sterling, but I still LOVE it for a boy.
It sounds weird to me as a name. It makes me think of sterling silver, and the name has a rather ugly sound to it with the long schwa on the first syllable. And the -ing ending never really sounds good in names.
Just a terrible name, boy or girl it's just bad.
Nice boy name. I don't know how someone could think a girl would ever want to be named Sterling. I can just imagine the torture they would get.
Really nice name, even though it's mostly for a boy I think naming your daughter this wouldn't be bad.
British currency is Pound Sterling. It's like calling your son Dollar or Yen or Euro.
I love the meaning, but the name makes me think of silver and jewelers and jewelry cleaners.
It's a very cool and interesting name!
My name is Sterling and I'm a guy. For all out there Sterling is a guy's name.
