My Mom's name. I like it, but it's very outdated indeed. 60s feel to it.
Sounds like Karen’s sister.
It's a bit tacky in my opinion, but not a bad name at all. I've grown to like it more - I especially like the Tam nickname you can make from it.
It's cute but very trailer trash.
Too dated. Most Tammys are over 60 now. Tammy Wynette was born in 1942.
Not a bad name actually but it seems, and I'm not stereotyping but all the ones I've ever known about which was about 8-10, were very promiscuous people. Even when they were in a relationship or married it seemed like they just couldn't keep their hands out of the cookie jar, every woman with this name had this trait... now let's hear from other people to see if this was so with others with this name.
Very retro. I can dig it.
Sounds like it's something to do with the stomach. I don't know. Not a bad name, but also not so good. Just boring.
I don't know why people don't like this name lol. This is one of my favorite names, it sounds very cute.
Too dumb. Terrible name.
Sounds dumb.
Name for a sweet lap dog.
The "Tammy" movies might explain why Tammy seems like a Country girl name.Wiki says: "The Tammy movies are a series of four light-hearted American films about a naive 17-year-old girl from Mississippi, produced by Universal between 1957 and 1967. The main character of the movies is Tambrey "Tammy" Tyree, portrayed as a kind, sweet and polite country girl looking for romantic love."And of course Tammy Wynette.
It's an okay name, but I prefer Tamara. I don't see this name as ditzy or "country".
I can only think of Trailer Trash Tammy.
Kind of adult like.
I'm also appalled that people will judge you by your name, wow. My name is Tammy but that's just it- it's my name I was given I didn't chose it and no I'm not a blonde or loose or a moron. I'm an intelligent tall skinny brunette with brown eyes.
I think of a country bumpkin when I hear this name.
I just happened on the Tammy name and saw some of the comments, although old, the one that said it sparked images of a stupid girl etc. I understand having that name and being upset about being stereotyped. Like if your name was Gidget, or Bambi or Barbie. But as much as I want to be like 'that comment is messed up', when the name Barbie, Bambi, etc is mentioned or a friend recently introduced his girlfriend as Barbie, it does innocently and automatically conjure up those images. Why Tammy? I'm not sure? The background does state that it was a really popular baby girl name during the late 50s 60s right around and during a popular t.v. series about a backwoods lovable girl named Tammy (or Tammi). But I hate to admit some names do- again, automatically because of being so stereotyped by society to automatically make you think dumb blonde stupid, unfortunately.
I don't see why people associate this name with the ditsy or white trash stereotype. My mom's name is Tammy and she can be such a pleasant woman, and smart in her own right.
I love the name Tammy. It could just be that it's my name, but I think it's really pretty and unique as I've never met another Tammy before. I don't think it resembles a ditzy blonde person and I believe that it is wrong for someone to just stereotype the name without knowing an actual Tammy.
I don't actually know anyone with the name Tammy, but it doesn't sound like a ditzy, blonde name in my opinion.
My name is Tammy. I was named by my grandmother. I am the only one she named of all her children and grandchildren. With each of her 5 children, after naming them... her husband would go up and change the name. Unbelievably rude but that's what he did! My mother had 4 girls and she told my grandmother if she had one more girl she would let grandma name me so that's why it's special to me.
I would've rather been called "Athena" or "Summer". Just because Athena was the goddess of wisdom and that seems like a pretty good reason to have it. Summer, because I love the season. Anyway, I've been told by some persian friends of mine that the name Tammy is a very good name where they come from. I've always thought it meant "Palm tree" or some other references call it "twins or thomas" which seems silly! How can (1) name mean a twin which means (2).
I prefer the meaning "Perfection". Not sure if it means perfectionist or what but it sure is a nice meaning! Can't get much better than that. LOL.
I never used to like the name. I thought it was plain and not feminine at all but I have had a lot of people, mostly males tell me how it's a very sexy strong woman's name. All Tammy's should be very proud.
I'm a Tammy... plain, ordinary ~ Tammy. I'm a brunette, I'm educated, I'm outgoing, and I never had the urge to change my name. I'm not ditzy, but I can be. I'm fun (so I'm told), and I have a kind heart (again, so I'm told). My mother and daddy named me after Tammy Wynette and the Tammy and the Professor/Doctor/etc. Movies. To be sure that they liked the name, they named their dog Tammy before I was born.
I resent the negative comments and believe that those who base their assumption of me based on my name, well, are fools.
So there!
I'm Tammy, red hair, blue eyes, not ditzy, have morals... enough for myself and 3 or 4 friends actually. Mom named me for that same 50's character... I hope that chick got paid! I was born in Iowa, so I guess the "country" thing is right... but we moved to Southern California when I was 2 so doesn't that cancel out the Iowa thing? Of course my middle name is Sue... so that might cancel out the California thing... eh, whatever, my husband and kids love me... that's all that matters.
My best friends name is Tammy and she has nothing to do with "country, stupid or trashy." Not. At. All. She's gorgeous, smart and extremely moral. What really gets on my nerves is when people think they are so "worldly" and "intelligent" and then they proceed to stereo-type everyone that's different than they are, which proves nothing except how ignorant they themselves are. Tammy is a super cute name.
My mom's name is Tammy. She is not blonde, she has dark brown hair and green eyes. She's not ditzy or preppy, she's very mellow and down to earth, extremely smart. I think it's really immature to judge someone by their name. My name is Scarlett, does that make me a slut? No. I think the name Tammy fits my mom, and it could fit anyone who carries it well.
Well, let's get rid of the stereotypes right now. Yes, I was named after the character in the Tammy and the Bachelor, Doctor, etc. Movies. I am not blonde. Redhead, actually. Tammy is my given name - not Tamara or any other form of the name. Friends and acquaintances often tell me that I can be intimidating because of my intellect, so we can dispel of the ditzy portion of the stereotype now. Apparently I've been a bit sheltered because I've never felt my name seemed ditzy or implied that I was less intelligent, independent or strong.
This name sounds too youthful to me, and it always makes me think of rather unintelligent country girls. I don't like Tamara either, but this name actually sounds less trashy to me, believe it or not. It would be better to go by another nickname if your name actually is Tamara, like Tam or Mara. But anyway, this isn't a mature or sophisticated name at all.
Well I would have to say being someone with the name Tammy myself, I find it sometimes boring, and feel it doesn't fit me. I have really dark hair, green eyes, and am decently intellectual. I'm not the "preppy" type and I don't run with the "mainstream" I wear very dark clothing all the time, I have piercings, and prefer the darker side of things. I will have to agree though when someone says the name "Tammy" even though it is mine, I'm always thinking of someone who is blonde, blue eyed, and very outgoing. Mainly going along with the movies Tammy Falls in Love or Tammy and the Doctor (who my mother says she named me after.)
Tammy does (and yes it's stereotypical and I apologise) remind me of a blonde (not ditzy though). I think it's a nice name, I wouldn't use it as a main name, maybe a middle name.
I think this name is cute but I wouldn't use it as a given name. But I also can't find any good names that have Tammy as a nickname.
My name is Tamara, but I go by Tammy. I am a blue eyed brunette, but I must say that almost every other female I've ever met or seen with this name is blonde--natural or bottled.
Personally, this name conjures up images of a really ditzy, frivolous, superficial woman of loose morals; I do not like it. "Tammy" sounds silly enough as is.
My given name is Tammy and I find it atrocious that someone would stereotype any person because of their name. And to same someone with this name is "ditzy" and a "superficial woman with loose morals"; I suppose your name is Candy, Kitty or something equally cheap. Didn't your mother ever tell you not to judge a book by it's cover. Don't judge a person by their name.
