Meaning & History

This name is often a pet form of Tamar, but it can also be a name in its own right. In that case, it is derived from Arabic تأمين (ta'min) meaning "insurance", which itself is ultimately derived from Arabic أمن (amn) meaning "security, peace". Also compare Arabic ضامن (daamin) meaning "guarantor, guarantee" (see Daamin) as well as Azerbaijani təmin "guarantee, security" and Turkish emin "sure, certain, secure, confident" (see Emin). The Arabic name Iman is probably also etymologically related, as to be faithful requires a certain kind of confidence or certainty.

Last but not least: also compare the Persian name Tahmina, which is very similar in appearance. Given the fact that many given names are of Persian origin in Georgia, it is within the realm of possibility that Tamuna as an independent name comes from that name.
