Meaning & History

Variant of Tanis. This was used by Canadian author L. M. Montgomery in her short story 'Tannis of the Flats' (1920), where it belongs to a Métis girl of Cree descent. Montgomery may have intended it to be a derivative of a Cree word meaning "daughter" (cf. Danis).
