Meaning & History

From the name of the Norse god Þórr (see Thor) combined with the element -bergr, which is associated with Old Norse berg, bjarg meaning "mountain, cliff" (from Proto-Germanic *bergaz) but may be derived from the present stem of the Old Norse verb bjarga "to save, to help" (making it a masculine equivalent of Þórbjǫrg; also compare Bergr). The name Bergþórr is composed of the same elements in reverse order.

The maternal grandfather of Olav Kyrre and Magnus II Haraldsson, two 11th-century kings of Norway, is known as Torberg Arnesson of Giske (ca. 1000-1050).
