Meaning & History

Medieval French alternate spelling of Thiboult and its variants Thiboud and Thibout, as the pronunciation of all these names is identical. The aforementioned names are no longer in use today, but the analogous forms Thibault, Thibaud and Thibaut still are.

In contemporary French, this name is usually a diminutive of Thibault and other given names that start with Thib-, as -ou is a French diminutive suffix. In these cases, the name Thibou is strictly informal, meaning that it is not used as an official name on birth certificates. That is how it is in France, at least. In the Dutch-speaking part of Belgium (Flanders), Thibou is used as an independent, official name on birth certificates.
