Meaning & History
Perhaps taken from Ancient Greek Thúlē (Θούλη), a name used by 4th century Greek explorer Pytheas to describe the northernmost location in the known world. The name Thule has been associated with Scandinavia and other parts of Northern Europe since the 19th century, but what landmass Pytheas was actually referring to is unknown.Thule may also be a modern form of the Old Norse name Tóli.
