Meaning & History

The origin of the first element of this name is a bit uncertain; it may be derived from the old Polish verb tolić "to silence", which in turn is ultimately derived from Proto-Slavic toliti "to calm, to soothe, to silence". The second element is derived from Polish gniew meaning "anger", which is derived from Slavic gnev "anger".
