From the English word "true" meaning "conforming to the actual state of reality or fact; factually correct; loyal, faithful; genuine; legitimate; accurate". From the Middle English trewe, from the Old English trīewe, (Mercian) trēowe 'trusty, faithful'.True was first used as a virtue name by the Puritans, mainly as a feminine name back then. The name had almost died out by the end of the 1800s, but was revived in the last years of the 20th century.
