Derived from Latin Tyrianus "of Tyre", an ancient city which is located in modern-day Lebanon. The name of the city itself is said to be derived from a Semitic word meaning "rock".In ancient times, the city was famous for the purple-red dye named Tyrian purple (also known as "royal purple", "imperial purple" or "imperial dye").
