I never knew Yoshi was Japanese till I went looking for cat names, so I named my kitten Yoshi and I think it fits her well. It's also a very cute name and I love the Nintendo character!

I love the cute, little character in the video games! It's a good association, I also love the name!
It's worth noting that the Nintendo character's name is originally pronounced "Yosshi" with a short 'o' and a doubled 's'. Maybe it's still possible to make the joke since it's still similar, but it's not AS obvious of a joke to them.
Yoshi was a very popular girl's name in Japan in the early 1900s.It peaked at #6 (1912-1914) and was last seen in the top 10 in 1919.It was most commonly spelled as ヨシ.

While Yoshi is a classic Japanese name, I'd avoid using it, since it's known to kids around the world as a Nintendo video-game character.

Yoshi is the wife of Dutch professional footballer Daryl Janmaat.
Based on some research that I've done (gathering names from passenger lists and US census data), Yoshi was popular for girls in the late Edo period and the Meiji period. Most of the female Yoshis would have had their names written in kana. This goes back to the fact that 2 syllable names were preferred at the time, more so before the Meiji period, which is why Yoshi was seen as a girl's name. Towards the 2nd half of the Meiji period and the Taishō period, those types of names were quickly shunted out in popularity by names ending in *ko.
Every time I hear this name, I think of Splinter's owner, Master Yoshi, from TMNT. I like this name and I personally would name my child Yoshi, though it'd be a middle name (eg: James Yoshi).
This is a good name, but I won't use it on a child. I'm afraid they might tease him/her like, "Oh! It's the green Yoshi! Where's Mario and Luigi?" It's good, but I'd rather name a pet this than a kid.
