Meaning & History

From the name used in the Eastern Orthodox Church for the festival of Candlemas or Purification (February 2), which commemorates the meeting of the infant Jesus and his mother with Simeon and Anna in the temple. It literally means "meeting" from Late Greek Ὑπαπάντη (Hypapantê), derived from ὑπαπαντάω (hypapantaô) "to meet, encounter". The Meeting of the Lord is one of the twelve Great Feasts in the Eastern Orthodox liturgical calendar.
