Meaning & History

Meaning uncertain; used very occasionally in Britain in the 20th century, probably because of the character by this name in the Gilbert and Sullivan comic opera Ruddigore, first performed in 1887; Zorah is the professional bridesmaid. It occurs in the Old Testament as a place name (cf. Joshua 19:41).
