Meaning & History

In Dutch, Frisian and Limburgish, Nies is predominantly a masculine given name. For the Dutch, it is a variant form of Nijs (which has a different pronunciation), while for the Frisians, it is a variant spelling of Nys (which has the same pronunciation). As for the Limburgians: in their case, the name is a short form of Dionysius. In all three cases, the name Dionysius is ultimately at the root, so in the end, Nies (as a masculine name) has the same etymological origin in these three languages.

With that said, Nies can also be a feminine given name in all three languages. In this case, the name is a short form of Angenies (Dutch and Limburgish) and Angenietsje (West Frisian). Both names are ultimately derived from the Greek feminine name Agnes, meaning that the two names have the same etymological origin and are therefore not all that different from each other.
