Meaning & History
Means "earth, ground, soil" in Lakota. In Oglala Lakota (Sioux) mythology, Makȟá (less correctly spelled Maka) was created by Íŋyaŋ ("stone"), then given the spirit Makȟá-akáŋl ("earth goddess").
