Meaning & History

Variant of Mikel, which is the oldest Georgian form of Michael.

Both Mikel and Mikela are very rare nowadays, to the point that they have pretty much fallen out of use. Mikheil is now the dominant form in Georgia. It is a more recent name, as it was most likely influenced by the Russian name Mikhail and therefore likely came into existence during the nearly two centuries that Georgia was under direct Russian rule (from 1801 to 1918 and then from 1921 to 1991).

In Georgian literature, Mikela is the name of the eponymous character of the novel Mikela (1904) written by Davit Kldiashvili (1862-1931). A film based on the novel was released in 1965 under the same name.
