Meaning & History

Perhaps derived from the Greek place name Φθία (Phthia); compare Φθῖος (Phthios) meaning "a Phthian, inhabitant of Phthia". In Greek mythology, the city of Phthia in Thessaly was the home of Achilles. Alternatively it might possibly be derived from the Greek verb φθίω (phthio) meaning "to decay, to wane, to dwindle". This was the name of a 4th-century BC Greek queen, daughter of Menon of Pharsalus, the Thessalian hipparch, and wife of King Aeacides of Epirus with whom she had his successor, son Pyrrhus, and two daughters named Deidamia and Troias.
