1/22/2015, 4:55 AM m4yb3_daijirou I had to change info about the title(s) of the kabuki play as I just realised that 'Benten Musume Meo no Shiranami' is the title referring to acts 3 and/or 4 in the play

Meaning & History

This name is used as 力丸 with 力 (rii, riki, ryoku, chikara) meaning "bear up, exert, power, strain, strength, strong" and 丸 (gan, maru, maru.i, maru.meru) meaning "curl up, explain away, full, make round, month, perfection, pills, roll up, round, seduce."

Before the Meiji Period (1868-1912), -maru (丸) was used as a suffix denoting affection (along with -maro {麿/麻呂}) and was given to boys of upper class until they reached 14.

Two fictional bearers of this name include Rikimaru, one of the main characters in the Tenchu video game series, and Rikimaru Nangō (南郷 力丸), one of the characters in the kabuki play, Aotozōshi Hana no Nishikie (青砥稿花紅彩画/あおとぞうしはなのにしきえ), which is also known as Shiranami Gonin Otoko (白波五人男) or Benten Kozō (弁天小僧).

Rikimaru is also used as a surname.
