Meaning & History

This name is used as 桂 (kei, katsura) meaning "Japanese Judas-tree" (unisex) or 葛 (kachi, katsu, kuzu, tsudzura, katsura) meaning "arrowroot, kudzu" (feminine).
桂 originally came about from a compound of 香 (ka) meaning "(good) smell, fragrance, scent," 出 (zu), a contraction of now obsolete 出ず (izu) meaning "to go out" (出る/deru in modern Japanese), and ら, which is a nominalising and pluralising suffix, reflecting the good smell of the wood.

Katsura is also used as a surname.

This name is rarely given to children, if given at all.
