Meaning & History

This name combines 左 (sa, sha, hidari) meaning "left" or 佐 (sa) meaning "assistant, help" with 京 (kyou, kin, kei, miyako) meaning "capital."

One bearer of this name was science fiction writer and screenwriter Sakyō Komatsu (小松 左京), born Minoru Komatsu (小松 実) (1931-2011).

As a word, Sakyō (左京) means "the left side of the capital," referring to an area east of Suzaku Avenue, which is the central avenue leading to the Imperial Palace from the south in ancient capitals.
