Meaning & History

From 締め/〆 (shime) meaning "bind, fastening, tightening," extended to refer to a rope used to cordon off consecrated areas or as a talisman against evil (written as 注連, 標 or 七五三).
It can also be written with a shi kanji, like 志 meaning "will, aim, goal" or 四 meaning "four," combined with 女 (me) meaning "woman."

The name did see some usage before the late 20th century (used only on females before the Meiji Period (1868-1912), though nowadays, it's very rarely used.
