Meaning & History

Derived from (Valencian) Catalan lledó meaning "(Mediterranean) hackberry fruit", which is ultimately derived from Vulgar Latin loto or lotus, a word that was used to refer to at least two kinds of plants and one kind of tree.

The usage of Lledó as a feminine name originally started in honour of the Virgen del Lledó ("Virgin of the Hackberry"), a Marian apparition that was first sighted in 1366 AD and was eventually made patron of the Valencian city Castellón de la Plana by Pope PIUS XI in 1922.
