Meaning & History

The name of three figures in The Book of Mormon. The most notable Helaman was a Nephite prophet and soldier, the son of Alma the Younger and brother of Shiblon and Corianton. This Helaman was best known for leading two thousand young men known as the stripling warriors into a battle which, despite their lack of military training, resulted in no fatalities. According to scholars at Brigham Young University, Helaman may mean "hammer of God," "yoke of God," or "visionary." In modern times, the given name Helaman is most common among Hispanic Mormons, although it is sometimes seen among Mormons in other cultures.
