Meaning & History

From Sanskrit एक (eka) meaning "one; happening only once, that one only" and अष्टका (ashtaka) meaning "eighth day after a full moon", possibly referring to the eighth day after the full moon of the month of Magha. According to the Atharvaveda this is the name of the mother of the god Indra.
