Meaning & History

Variant of Chione. This was the name of a virgin martyr and saint who lived during the reign of the Roman emperor Diocletian. She was burned to death in Thessalonica (which is nowadays Thessaloniki in Greece) in 304 AD, together with her (also virgin) sisters Agape and Irene. Her name, which literally means "snow" in Greek, is sometimes said to figuratively mean "purity" (probably as in: as pure as snow).
