Meaning & History

Most likely derived from Greek γοργός (gorgos) meaning "grim, fierce, terrible". However, it's also possible that the name is derived from the Greek verb γοργεύω (gorgeuō) meaning "to move rapidly, to hasten", which itself is related to the Greek noun γοργία (gorgia) meaning "agility, nimbleness, mobility". Another possibility is a derivation from the Greek verb γοργόομαι (gorgoomai) "to be spirited", which itself is related to the Greek noun γοργότης (gorgotēs) meaning "liveliness, vigour" (sometimes it's erroneously translated as "rapidity"). Gorgo was the name of the wife of king Leonidas I of Sparta (5th century BC).
