Meaning & History

According to a 15th-century chronicle, this was the name of the wife of Ecgberht, king of Wessex from 802 until his death in 839, but this is dismissed by academic historians (in view of its late date). Supposedly Redburga was a sister-in-law of Charlemagne as the sister of Luitgard, his last wife. It is possible that the name is derived from Old English *Rædburh, composed of the elements ræd meaning "advice, counsel, wisdom" and burg meaning "fortress".
