She is the national personification of Spain. It is thought to be derived from Phoenician 𐤔𐤐𐤍 𐤀𐤉 (ʾiy šapan) meaning "land of hyraxes". Another proposed other possible derivation, which is from Phoenician 𐤑𐤐𐤍 𐤀𐤉 (‘i ṣapun) meaning "(is)land to the north".
