Meaning & History

Means "house of mercy" or "house of grace", derived from Aramaic בית (beth) "house, home" and חסדא (hesda) "mercy, kindness; favour, clemency". The second element could also derive from an identical word meaning "shame, dishonour". This was the name of a pool in Jerusalem, mentioned in the New Testament, which was known for its healing properties.
