[Opinions] Is it wierd to give your kids mexican names if your not Mexican?
I sorta think it is but I really like Esteban (Steven).

I think all names can be used on all people, whether one is Mexican or not. If we were to only use names that correspond with our religion or nationality, we would live in a very bland world. As for the name Esteban, I don't care for it. I much prefer Steven.

No I dont think its wierd bc I like Esteban too! I think that if you like the name yu should use it. Or you can name him Steven and call him Esteban at home and he can make the decision about which he wants to go by at school!

In theory, I think it's fine to choose names outwith your own heritage. But in practice, they'll often raise eyebrows or just seem odd with your surname. I admit I *would* wonder, if I saw a redheaded child named Muhammad or a Spanish-speaking child named Tighearnan. I wouldn't think there was anything wrong with it - it would just surprise me. Then again, the same redheaded child could pull off another Arabic name - Layla or Samara would work fine - and I wouldn't be surprised to see a Hispanic child named Conan. So I suppose it depends on how ethnic the name *seems*, rather than the actual ethnicity. Hope this makes sense :-/Esteban does sound quite out-there to me, as an English speaker. I think of firstname-surname combos such as Esteban Smith and Esteban Jones, and it would seem a little odd. But if your surname is less bread-and-butter English, it might work.

Heidi...You just posted 8 minutes ago! Please try to put things in the same post. Everything eventually moves down, lower and lower. Then, it moves into the archives, where no one can post anymore. We like to keep everything on this board for as long a possible. Take that into consideration. And, no it isn't weird.

Is it weird to give your kids non-Mexican names if you are Mexican? My husband is 100% Mexican, I'm half, and you can see our son's name... I don't think it's weird at all.
I can think of weirder things...Edit: added commentProud mama of Elijah (2003)
