HELLO?The page reads: "Names by USAGE" -- not "Names by Language".Not all Jewish names are Hebrew. Many are Yiddish. And your own mom's name was Egyptian, Jesus baby.-- Nanaea

Juses does have a little point thereWhile you're right that not all Jewish names are Hebrew, some of the names would be more correct to tag under "Hebrew" as "usage", since they are used only (or mostly) by Hebrew speakers, and not by Jews who speak other languages. For example, names like YAKOV, SHMUEL, SHIMON, NATAN, and so on, are used in Israel, but I believe Jews in the US or other places mostly use the English (or other) versions: JACOB, SAMUEL, SIMON, NATHAN,...And some of the names are only used as Hebrew names, and aren't really "Jewish" (NIR, OREN, RON, SHAI...).However, since it only applies to some of the names in that category, (not for the Yiddish ones, as you pointed out), I guess changing that would only complecate things.

But Jesus manages to cover it with his WWJD? baseball cap...It also depends on how one views the term "Jewish". Here in the U.S., "Jewish" as much describes one's ethnicity as one's religion. And sometimes just one's ethnicity alone. For example, of my own Jewish parents, my father was an atheist -- but a Jew, nevertheless.-- Nanaea

-Abslutely!But there's a difference between a "Jewish" ethnicity, and being a Hebrew speaker, using Hebrew names.

Law of Return, and all that..."But there's a difference between a "Jewish" ethnicity, and being a Hebrew speaker, using Hebrew names."Definitely. Which is why (as you pointed out so well) we have Hebrew names which aren't necessarily "Jewish".-- Nanaea
