What do you think of Delaney (Laney for nn) for a girl? Is it too masculine?

No, it isn't too masculine, but it is too little-girlish, stripperish, snobby, and dated.

My cousin just used this for his daughter, but they spelled it Delanie. (I prefer Delaney, if it must be used.) I don't like Lainey at all.

Sorry, but I can't stand this name. I see nothing nice about it at all and I think it's way too masculine for a girl. Sorry!

I have a friend who has a girl called Delainey (the 'i' in it makes it look better I think), and she is just adorable. We call her Lainey Lou as a nn. It's a gorgeous name! But in the end, call your baby what you like, not because someone doesn't like the name or not. Once it's attached to the baby people love the name because they will love the baby! They won't hate your baby if you call it Delainey. Just don't call it Apple!

I think Delaney's too masculine for a girl. It's also too surnamey for me, but that quality doesn't bother me nearly as much if the name's on a boy rather than a girl.
It's also rather trendy for girls right now, I believe.

I don't think it's masculine. I used to really dislike this name but a friend named her daughter this last Fall and now I think it's kind of cute.

I don't usually like last names as first names, but I have ALWAYS LOVED Delaney. It is beautiful!!

Delaney is too surname-y for a boy or a girl. I don't find it feminine or masculine. It's trendy, too, following the surnames for children theme.

I think it's kind of cute. Not my style but I don't hate it. It doesn't strike me as masculine.

I think it's masculine and surnamey and it makes me think of "de Lagny" (duh-lah-nyee), "from Lagny", and I wonder why someone would name a kid after Lagny, this awful town where the last -still commented on!- event is the arrival of Joan of Arc more than 500 years ago.

You've come to the wrong board for asking this, my friend. ;) This place is quite a lost colony of people who detest surnames on girls.
I think that Delaney sounds feminine enough to work on a girl, but it doesn't have any real femininity to it. Laney isn't pretty, nor is Delaney, in any long-sighted sense; it's simply in the current mode, and the current mode values a very different sort of attractive quality than I do.
I have a weakness for the name Lain, though (not Laine or Lane or Layne or anything else of the sort), which can be blamed on the anime, I suppose. I think that Della's a fun little name, too, with a much truer spirit than Delaney. Where Delaney sounds like a plastic cowgirl doll in cardboard packaging, Della sounds like a girl with dusty legs and a muddy hem, if you know what I mean. Delaney sounds prepackaged to me, like a one-size-fits-all cowpoke name for people who won't even see wild animals (or even farm animals) regularly but want to think they might.
Instead of Delaney, I'd suggest Adele, Adela, Della, Nell, Eleanor, Ellen, Cassia, Elaine, Delia, Daisy, Billie, May, Detta, or Jane. I'm not sure that any of those would catch your fancy, but I find they all have the integrity that Delaney lacks in my eyes.

I think I agree. My husband likes it--I feet it's trendy and not feminine. I think I'll have him read all the comments! In the meantime, I still like "Kate"....nice, simple and classic.
