Most gem / precious stone / whatever names really aren't my style at all, but Pearl is nice enough for a middle name.I much prefer Mae, I think just because it looks more cute and spunky, instead of the simple May. I really like it as a middle name, and a gp combo of mine is Sadie Mae. :)Mae is kind of tough as a fn, but here goes nothing:Mae Eleanor
Mae Victoria
Mae Elisabeth
Mae Adelaide
Mae Sarai
Mae Judith
Mae Gwendolyn
Mae Abigail

I love Pearl! Pearl Mae / May would be sweet!I say May for a fn, and either for a mn. May is easier to spell.

I really like Pearl, though I prefer it as a middle name.I prefer May, though I don't care for the name. Mae looks hickish and trashy to me.

Like the others, I'm quite torn but think that May would get my vote simply because Mae West is what people will think of immediately, which is neither good or bad for me but nothing I necessarily want.Love Pearl, its DH's grandmother's name and I think it may make a comeback with names like Ruby, Lily, Violet, and the like but I think we'll stick to it as a middle name for our girls since it's not quite in our top 10 and I'd love for them all to have it as their second middle name since we won't use any other family names from his side.

May vs. MaeOn one hand, I prefer Mae simply because it feels like it has considerably more spunk than May. May feels quaint and simple, while Mae seems sassy enough to make an impression yet sweet enough to not get on your nerves. I think Mae makes me think of the actress Mae West (even though I've never seen any of her work, I've known about her for a very long time), hence the feeling of more spunk. On the other hand (and we're delving into Personal Association territory now), the number one reason I like Mae/May is because it's the name of the girl in what's probably my favorite song by my favorite band (Slide by the Goo Goo Dolls). And if I recall correctly, it's spelled May there. If I were to ever use the name on a child, it would overall be because I love that song so much, and I might feel obligated to spell it the way it appears there. So, uh, yeah, I guess I'm still stuck in the middle. I've long prefered the Mae spelling, but I've lately started to ponder May. There was the issue of which one looks more "complete" as a first name, but you've made me see both sides on that issue. :PAs for Pearl, I think it's a sweet name, though I expect it's going to become pretty popular in the next few years, if it isn't already. I can't think of any combos right now (I'm terrible at that stuff), sorry. I'll try to get back to you on it, though!

Ohh...I always thought he was saying, "Oh man, put your arms around me..." May would make a bit more sense... heh.

Pearl is lovely. I really like it, but I could never use it due to a rather unfourtunate great-grandmother. I think it is extremely sweet and classy. I doesn't come off cheap like a kid named Diamond might. It also makes me think of the Scarlet Letter which is a nice book. Pearl Evangeline comes to mind. I also like the suggestion of Pearl Mariana. I think Pearl needs something long and maybe a bit flowery to balance th shortness. Pearl Josephine sounds nice to my ears too. I prefer Mae as it is in my own name. I also like the way it looks. It seems more complete to me than just May. May also makes it seems like you are asking permission for something, especially in the fn slot, "May Elizabeth..?" My name is spelled Mae, but my mom still sometimes says, "Caroline Mae... but then again she may not!" She likes to think of herself as clever.

I like Pearl a lot, it's been on my mind a lot lately too. I actually asked about Perla today - I think I like that a little better than Pearl.I prefer May to Mae. I saw your argument that it's like "May Emily do this?" and such, which makes a good point, but I just like the y ending more than the e. I think it looks more complete as a first name. May seems simple and full; Mae seems too simple to my eyes.

I love Pearl. One of my current combos is Juliet Pearl. I also think that Pearl Marina go well together.ETA: Oops I forgot to mention about Mae/May. I actually like both of them. To me the spelling depends on the name I am putting with it. One of my current combos is Rhianna May. So for that one I used the May spelling. I actually do like both spellings.
