[Opinions] WDYTO Michal?
Lately I've really started to like the name Michal for a girl. It's a Bible name and is pronounced about the same as Michael but with a more feminine spelling, I think. What do you think of it? And what about Michael for a girl? Does it sound okay?

I live in the U.S. and the few times I heard it pronounced it sounded more along the lines of McCall. :- I greatly, greatly dislike the name Michael so I wouldn't use Michal; also I'd worry she'd constantly be mistaken for a boy, which could get annoying (even if it's just in print) and her name would be misspelled and mispronounced constantly (seeing as most people here can't agree on how it's pronounced! lol).

I think there are quite enough people in the world named Michael (or whatever variant thereof you're interested in), boy or girl, but if you're still interested, save it for a boy. 99% of the time you're going to be saying it, not writing it. Michael is Michael.

I don't like Michael for a boy and I don't like Michal for a girl. :P

Michal - for a girl fine though not a favorite of mine
Michael - for a girl no its a boys name with perfectly servicable female forms in Michelle and Michaela

No, it's not pronounced like Michael . . .The correct pronunciation is MI-hal, but the 'h' is a rougher sound, a bit closer to the 'ch' in Loch or Bach.I don't mind it but it's not a favourite either.

ActuallyI believe the correct (Hebrew) pronouciation is mee-KHAL, with the glutteral "ch" sound in Hebrew and German. :) However, you probably wouldn't get that in an English-speaking country.

I'm sure I've heard it pronounced like Michael by English speakers. I am very ignorant of Hebrew so don't take my word for it, but the *English* pronunciation might well be like Michael. Think of Achan, Enoch, Malachi etc. which use the hard "k" sound in English._____________________________________________________________________Elinor'Why do people with closed minds, always open their mouths?'

That's true. I don't actually know why Enoch, Achan, and Malachi are different. Maybe you could ask Miss Claire? The English pron'n of Michal could be like Michael or MEE-kal or mee-KAL. It depends, and there isn't really a 'right' way to say it in English.
