Hi Behind the Namers.
Please tell me your thoughts on the names Anne and Sylvia for a new little new born baby.
Please let me know what you think of them individually - how do they make you feel?
Also which one would you choose?

I love both names. I think of Anne as a middle name more than a first.

I like them. They're both classic, pretty, simple, and a bit foresty but in a very tame way (so... more like "gardeny"?)
Anne needs to be in a good combo or else it could sound bland (it needs a classic feel to make it sound like "Anne". If it sounds like "Ann" then it's bland and boring. Obviously those don't really sound different but I don't know how else to explain it.) Sylvia is usually always good. Sylvia is good with a wider range of combos.

Really like both name, there's a really classic air about them.
If I had to choose, it would be Sylvia.

Anne ---- boring boring boring. And not pretty, even if it weren't boring. I guess, though, if I knew someone who named their baby Anne, I'd have to approve of the fact that it is a feminine name, and not one of the sludge-surnames that are being slapped onto baby girls these days, and it's a classic and all that. I'd still think that there are far better choices.
Sylvia -- this one I love. It's shimmering and crisp. Not boring. I'd love to hear of someone naming their baby Sylvia.
Of the two, I'd definitely choose Sylvia, by a mile.

I like Anne, it's simple and pretty, but not overly dull. It's a touch shocking with how names are rather flowery or masculine most times these days, but in a good way. I would love to meet a little one.
Sylvia has a little bit of a sexy feeling to it for me, and I'm not sure what association I have that is tipping that off. In any case, I think it is beautiful, but perhaps a little mature. I would want to call her Sylvie for a few years if I had one.

Sylvia sounds like the name of an old grumpy german lady however the nickname Silvy sounds more like a happy smiley blonde haired little girl. Still I would never use Sylvia because it just sounds so old, good for grandparents.
Anne is a very nice also old but timeless name and Annie is an always great nickname, love it :)
I would say chose Anne but it is ultimately up to you!

Anne and Sylvia?
I dislike Anne.
For me it is a boring, filler and overused name.
I like it only with Marie (Anne-Marie, Annemarie).
Sylvia is more modern...
I prefer Silvia telling the truth but Sylvia is better than Anne. I think Sylvia is more usable today.
I like its meaning and how it sounds.
And it is quite clasic in English.

I love Sylvia! It's vintage, fun, feisty, and sprightly. Not stuffy, but energetic and playful at times, whilst also down to earth, polite and elegant. I really like the meaning, and sound. Awesome name!

I'm either disqualified or overqualified to answer this question because my name is Sylvia Anne.
I love both as first names. Personal associations with my own name were always woods, silver, sylphs, forests, fairies & dryads. Anne of Green Gables had poetry and fantasy stories in her head and so did I.
However, the name Anne by itself is really a blank slate for me. The Annes and Anns I've known have been of such varied ages and personalities that I don't get a feeling (other than general pleasantness) when I hear it.

Anne is very traditional and sweet, but it is a bit unexpected these days. I like the nn Annie for a little girl. I like Annabeth, Annemarie or even just Anna a little better.
Sylvia is an ancient name, but it has more of a modern feel these days. I like the Silvia spelling a little better.

I like Sylvia. It feels classic and I like the nn Sylvie. It rolls off the tongue nicely and it's easy to picture on a child or woman. I have a positive impression of the name.
To me, Anne feels like it's missing something. It's a perfectly fine name, but I can't help but feel like it should have another part like Anne-Marie, Maryanne, Roseanne, Annette, etc. I know it's not, but I tend to think of it as a filler mn.

Tbh I find both names rather dated, boring and frumpy.
